Are Your Kids Enjoying

The Great Outdoors?

Don't Let Allergies Keep Them Down!

Kids should be happy-go-lucky and be able to play and learn about the great outdoors and nature. But when seasonal allergies hit and hay fever symptoms take over that is no fun for children or parents. Don’t despair! Here are some preventative measures to help junior fight allergies and get back outside.

  • Check the pollen count in your area and if it is high keep your kids inside.
  • Make sure your kids eat a daily healthy diet and avoid sugar and processed foods.
  • Keep your child hydrated - Sneezing and nose blowing can deplete fluids and dry out sinuses. Drinking plenty of water. It helps filter and thin mucus as well as many other health benefits.
  • Steam in the shower or a vaporizer with essential oil can help relieve sinus congestion.
  • Use a cold compress for red itchy eyes and discourage rubbing eyes which will aggravate them more.
  • Use soft tissue with lotion or aloe vera to alleviate nose rash.
  • Use a warm compress or sinus mask to help relieve congestion and sinus pressure.
  • Avoid dust collectors in the bedroom
    • Stuffed animals - limit them and clean them regularly.
    • Put knick-knacks, books, puzzles, games, etc...in plastic storage bins.
  • Remove carpet - use throw rugs that can be washed.
  • Dust and use HEPA vacuum regularly.
  • Use window coverings that can be washed.
  • Use a HEPA filter.
  • Avoid using a wood burning fireplace.
  • Limit outdoor chores during high pollen count like mowing lawns, or raking  leaves or pulling weeds

Safe Supplements for Kids

Giving your kids medication should be a last resort. As we know, there can be side effects from taking allergy medication, like drowsiness and dryness, which is only a temporary fix. Ideally, you want to help your child strengthen their immune system and digestive system. The best thing is to make sure they are eating a healthy, well-balanced nutritious diet, drinking plenty of water, taking a multivitamin, as well as natural supplements safe for kids.

Stress and Allergies

Many kids have stress and anxiety and do not have the tools to deal with such emotions. This can cause an allergy reaction to become even more severe. Learning how to keep the body and mind calm, through yoga and meditation practice, can come in handy to not only help relieve allergies symptoms but is a great tool for daily stress from school, social and family situations, or anything else that may come up.

Allergies and Pregnancy

Being pregnant is one of the most joyous times in a woman's life, however...hormones can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as swelling and itching. It's also not unusual to experience what's known as "pregnancy rhinitis".  The last thing you need during pregnancy are allergy symptoms to compound your discomfort. Focus on a healthy diet and keep your immune system at its optimum. Take the recommended preventative measures and consult your doctor before taking any type of supplement or medication. Even herbal supplements must be used with caution.

These recommendations go for nursing mothers as well.

Keep in mind, whatever you do to optimize your own health as a mother can benefit your nursing child as well.
